An evening with Colin Anthony

This coming Sunday (30 November) marks the return of Colin Anthony performing with the Dearne Big Band this time at the Holiday Inn Dodworth. As a little reminder of what the evening is about here’s an article which was published in the Barnsley Chronicle last year.

Popular local band gets supports from Professional Star.

Locally based Dearne Big Band have been playing music in and around our region for well over 30 years since it was founded by the late Holin Hammerton.

Holin was a local music teacher who made it his mission to reach out and involve as many children as possible in music of all kinds including dance bands, musicals and choirs. His success can be measured in the hundreds of people who fondly remember playing and singing in his shows and bands, many of whom were sufficiently inspired to become accomplished and professional musicians in their own right.

Following his untimely death in 2010, existing and former members of the Big Band vowed to keep the Dearne Big Band and Barnsley Youth Jazz Orchestra running as a tribute and lasting legacy in Holin’s name.

Many of the band’s older band members provide one to one tuition to the youngsters helping them learn the basics and then nurturing their skills and enthusiasm to become competent musicians. Tuition is structured and all players are encouraged to undertake professionally recognised music examinations which qualify for extra UCAS points when applying to university.

Additionally, each year some of the band’s qualified teachers and senior musicians visit a number of local schools offering starter packs’ to youngsters who want to try out a range musical instruments. The pack offers tuition, loan of a musical instrument and free family tickets to watch our orchestra live.‘

Lorraine Cawood, (Musical Director), commented; “We are tremendously proud that against the backdrop of these extremely difficult times we have managed to keep our heads above water and still continue to deliver on our ethos of “providing music for all in the Barnsley Community”.

To help raise much needed funding the band is in the middle of a series monthly concerts at  Ardsley House (Ed. of course this is now Holiday Inn Dodworth), and they have been delighted to receive an offer of support from internationally renowned Jazz and big band singer Colin Anthony who will perform with them.

From supporting the Beatles on a UK tour and fronting his own band in German Rock’n’Roll Clubs to the sophistication of the BBC Radio Big Band and Orchestras, Colin has covered it all.

Colin has released several single records and has appeared all over the world including the Kremlin and the QE2 on jazz and dance gigs with outfits such as Barry Forgie and the BBC Radio Big Band, The Syd Lawrence Orchestra and his own bands. He is currently regularly featuring with the Glenn Miller Big Band.

Jazz critic Chrissie Murray, editor of Jazzwise, said in Ronnie Scott’s Magazine “Where’s he been all our lives? The finest big-band singer the UK ever produced?!” Dave Gelly of The Observer said “Britain is not so well supplied with good male singers that we can afford to overlook one of Colin Anthony’s stature”.

The band is performing better than ever says Lorraine Cawood and with the added support of a singer of Colin’s pedigree this should be an absolutely fabulous evening.

Tickets are only £5 and will be available on the door.

Todwick Village Hall

A wonderful evening was had by all.  The venue was full, every seat was taken.  The band played 3 varied sets of music by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to name a few.

The band were very impressed with the refreshments provided – Pizza & Beer – and have requested that it becomes a regular feature!!!! (They can dream!)

Happy Birthday was sung to the organiser of the event Sheila and she requested one of her favourite songs to be sung ‘Top Hat, White Tie and Tails’ and Moria and the band obliged. Shiela gave us a lovely testimonial which you can read here.

A big thank you to Rob Cottrell who came along and played drums for the evening he did a fantastic job.

The evening ended in a standing ovation and an encore.  We are all hoping to do it all again in the future.

Holiday Inn – September

Sunday 28th September saw the start of a new era for the band’s Barnsley winter season, with a new venue and a slightly new format. The authenic “jazz club” feel of the Scarlett Suite beneath the Holiday Inn at Dodworth sparked the interest of both new and familiar faces in the audience, all of which warmly welcomed the band to their new setting.

Barnsley MD Paul Dent led the band with a number of well-known classics from the band’s repertoire, with vocalist performances from Moyra, Jamie and Jordan. Despite Jamie feeling somewhat ‘under-the weather’, the band’s trademark comedy wasn’t in short supply.

Details of the band’s community fund campaign through Lloyd’s Bank were also announced, requesting for votes to obtain a grant of up to several thousand pound, to support our younger players in the Barnsley Youth Jazz Association. But as they say on the telly “The lines have closed so please don’t vote as they won’t be counted!”

Comments from the audience throughout the night praised the new venue and acoustic sound, along with the new 3-tier arrangement of the band on stage. The second performance of the season at Holiday Inn Barnsley will take place on Sunday 26th October from the new time of 7:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!

There was a warm welcome and a good audience turn out for the season opener at Carlton Park Hotel. The band played well known tunes and songs ranging from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra to name a few.

Highlights of the night included Jamie singing in his best Spanish accent to Sway! Birthday celebrations for our long standing band member Andy (who came to the gig actually on his birthday to help us out!) and to top it all the MD is now looking at flights to Lanzarote! Thanks guys!

Filey Lifeboat Day

For the first time in about 15 years it was a bit of an unusual set up at Filey Lifeboat Day, as unfortunately the weather wasn’t kind to us (it absolutely bucketed it down with rain) but we didn’t let that spoil the proceedings or stop several portions of fish and chips!

A number of people had made the journey to Filey especially to raise money for the RNLI so we played in the lifeboat house itself of which we had a captive audience! Half time drinks were held in the Cobble Landing Bar for the band and a good time was had by all. Jamie Shaw modelled his brand new wellies which came in handy given the amount of water just outside the bar.

It really was a shame about the weather but hopefully Filey RNLI have raised sufficient funds through the army of dedicated volunteers & The Dearne Big Band & Singers.  A big thank you to everyone who made the journey over and we look forward to a dry Filey Lifeboat Day next year!

Filey Lifeboat Day

The Dearne Big Band and Singers have a long history of events in Filey. The lifeboat day is a favourite of the year for the band and somewhat of a tradition, this year we’ll be playing on Sunday 10th August 2014. Years ago we used to play in front of the actual lifeboat house with the lifeboat still in place! However we now reside just a little way along the promenade next to the ice-cream kiosk and more importantly in front of some shelter from the east coasts variable weather, we’ve booked the sunshine again for this year!

We’ll be arriving to set up around 12 noon and will be playing a couple of sets to raise fund for the Filey Lifeboat from 1pm onwards. We normally take a break for the very impressive display by the Sea King helicopter and the lifeboat pictured above.

Well that was a wonderful evening.  Lots of people got into the spirit and donned their 1940’s regalia, none more so than the event organiser Elaine Humpheries from Friends of Clifton Park. Elaine is pictured to the right of Loraine our Musical Director in the photograph above.

The band also had a great time listening to Mike Mullarkey who had everybody singing along. He even enlisted the boys of the band to be his backing singers for Swing Low Sweet Chariot, some dubious harmonies could be heard!
