History

The Dearne Big Band was formed in 1978 for pupils of the Foulstone School by the school’s former music teacher Holin Hammerton.

The band was originally known as the Dearne Youth Big Band until its name was changed in 1983 to the Dearne Big Band and Singers to reflect the fact that many within the band were no longer youth’s. This is still evident today with the age range in the Band of 16 to 60 years.

The Band has acted as a stepping stone for many of the members over the years both within the music industry and professional fields. Many members (both past and present) are now successful musicians either in a professional or semi-professional basis. The band has several music teachers in its present line up.

Sadly Holin passed away in 2010 leaving the organisation in the capable hands of his son Danny Hammerton and Loraine Cawood.

The Dearne Big Band & Singers is the primary fundraiser for The Barnsley Youth Jazz Association.

The Barnsley Youth Jazz Association is a non-profit making music service based in Darfield Barnsley. It’s objective is to give individual music tuition for children aged 5-18 at an affordable price. The association provides instruments, tuition & various bands that children can participate in. It is an affordable music service for young people in our community with the ethos of “Music for all”.

None of the members of The Dearne Big Band & Singers take a fee for their performances, all fees are re-invested into The Barnsley Youth Jazz Association.
