The first notes of American Patrol rang through the Carlton Suite announcing the opening of the first concert of the Rotherham season. The familiar faces of the band were joined by new faces, as some of our “younger” members made their debut performance.
MD Loraine Cawood lead the band through a set of classic Big Band and swing pieces leaving the audience in high spirits, eagerly awaiting the next concert of the season on October 11th at 7:30 pm, as usual the ticket price will be £5.00 on the door.
What a wonderful sunny Sunday afternoon, time for ice creams and sandcastles. This year the Dearne Big Band were again privileged to be invite to play for the RNLI Filey Lifeboat day. The “human fruit machine” and other activities from the fund raisers made for a great day out. We are looking forward to our “day out at the sea side” next year, and would like to thank all the volunteers who made the day.
The Dearne Big Band hosted it’s 1st Summer Ball fundraiser and reunion on the 6th June 2015 at the Holiday Inn Barnsley. The evening started off with a complimentary drink on arrival and a fantastic 3 course meal. Afterwards the big band provided 2 hours of entertainment where everyone was dancing to classic big band tunes mixed with some dance favourites. At the interval we hosted a roll the £1 to the whiskey bottle and drew the raffle. It was wonderful to see past big band members (alumni) again to catch up and reminisce over old times. Josh was DJ and sound man for the evening and finished the night off with some great hits. A big thank you to everyone who was involved in setting up the evening and thank you to everyone who supported us on the night. We all had a great time and look forward to next years Summer Ball!
Our singer Ann’s Dad is a stalwart support of the band. We were very happy to play for his surprise 80th birthday party back in May this year. Alan we hope you had a great night and hope to see you at this year’s Carlton Park concerts.
The Dearne Big Band had the pleasure of celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day at the Westfield Centre South Elmsall. There was lots of dancing as everyone entered into the spirit of the VE Day celebrations and a good time was had by all.
A wonderful evening was had by all. The venue was full, every seat was taken. The band played 3 varied sets of music by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to name a few.
The band were very impressed with the refreshments provided – Pizza & Beer – and have requested that it becomes a regular feature!!!! (They can dream!)
Happy Birthday was sung to the organiser of the event Sheila and she requested one of her favourite songs to be sung ‘Top Hat, White Tie and Tails’ and Moria and the band obliged. Shiela gave us a lovely testimonial which you can read here.
A big thank you to Rob Cottrell who came along and played drums for the evening he did a fantastic job.
The evening ended in a standing ovation and an encore. We are all hoping to do it all again in the future.
Sunday 28th September saw the start of a new era for the band’s Barnsley winter season, with a new venue and a slightly new format. The authenic “jazz club” feel of the Scarlett Suite beneath the Holiday Inn at Dodworth sparked the interest of both new and familiar faces in the audience, all of which warmly welcomed the band to their new setting.
Barnsley MD Paul Dent led the band with a number of well-known classics from the band’s repertoire, with vocalist performances from Moyra, Jamie and Jordan. Despite Jamie feeling somewhat ‘under-the weather’, the band’s trademark comedy wasn’t in short supply.
Details of the band’s community fund campaign through Lloyd’s Bank were also announced, requesting for votes to obtain a grant of up to several thousand pound, to support our younger players in the Barnsley Youth Jazz Association. But as they say on the telly “The lines have closed so please don’t vote as they won’t be counted!”
Comments from the audience throughout the night praised the new venue and acoustic sound, along with the new 3-tier arrangement of the band on stage. The second performance of the season at Holiday Inn Barnsley will take place on Sunday 26th October from the new time of 7:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
There was a warm welcome and a good audience turn out for the season opener at Carlton Park Hotel. The band played well known tunes and songs ranging from Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Natalie Cole and Frank Sinatra to name a few.
Highlights of the night included Jamie singing in his best Spanish accent to Sway! Birthday celebrations for our long standing band member Andy (who came to the gig actually on his birthday to help us out!) and to top it all the MD is now looking at flights to Lanzarote! Thanks guys!
Hope to see you all on Sunday 12th October for our 100 years of big band night.
